European Union General Data Protection Regulation (EUGDPR)

European Union General Data Protection Regulation (EUGDPR)

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is a new legislation that applies to all organisations who collect, store and process any data belonging to EU citizens. The GDPR not only applies to certain EU organisations but can also apply to non-EU organisations, regardless of their location in the world.

The GDPR was approved by the EU Parliament in April 2016 and came into effect on 25 May 2018. The main reason for the introduction of GDPR is to provide people with more control over their personal data. Its main purpose is to focus and alter the way in which businesses are acquiring, storing and managing people’s private information.

For companies that still haven’t taken the hint, firms that are found to have breached or violated any part of the legislative package after initial sanctions can be fined up to €20 million (approximately RM 95.35 million) or 4% of a company’s worldwide turnover, whichever is greater.
